Meters and readings

How do I read my smart meter?

If you have a first generation smart meter (known as SMETS1 meters), we won't be able to take your meter readings automatically. Your meter will continue to work, but in “dumb” mode, like a traditional meter that you read off manually.

To make sure your bills are as accurate as possible, please continue to send us your meter readings every month. Find out how to submit your meter readings easily online.

You might have a smart meter with a keypad, or with "A" and "B" buttons. You can find instructions for reading both both below.

Reading a smart meter with a keypad

For smart electricity meters, your reading will be a number followed by “kWh”.

For smart gas meters, the reading will be a number followed by “m3”.

Press 9 on the keypad. Your smart meter screen will show IMP KWH, followed by 8 numbersw and “kWh” – for example, 0001234.5.

If you have a two-rate meter, you’ll need to supply a meter reading for your energy usage during daytime/peak hours and nighttime/off-peak hours.

  • To get your nighttime/off-peak reading: Press 6 on the keypad until you see IMP R01, followed by 8 digits. We only need the first 7 numbers (that includes any zeros at the start) - leave out any numbers after the decimal place.
  • To get your daytime/peak hours reading: Press 6 on the keypad until you see IMP R02, followed by 8 digits. Again, we only need the first 7 numbers (including any zeros) - leave out any numbers after the decimal place.
