Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

SEG: Get paid for your power and help make the grid greener

If you generate renewable electricity at home, you can get paid for putting the extra energy you produce back onto the national grid. Under the government’s Smart Export Guarantee, energy suppliers offer payments to homeowners and businesses for the excess green energy they produce. It replaces the government’s Feed-in Tariff (FiT), which closed in March 2019.

The Smart Export Guarantee is all about making as much of Britain’s energy as clean and green as possible, so we’re big fans. Applications for our SEG tariff are now open.

Our tariff is currently in beta. It’s a brand-new product and we’re still fine-tuning our systems, so there may be one or two glitches as we find our feet. Right now, we’re not able to offer you information on your SEG tariff in your online account, or monthly statements. But we guarantee that you’ll always get paid on time and we’ll resolve any billing or payment queries you have as quickly as possible.

How much will I get paid?

We’ll pay you at a rate of 1p per kWh.

How will payments work?

We’ll ask you how you’d like to be paid when we get in touch to get you set up on your tariff. Once you’re signed up, your first payment will be 6 months later. We’ll then pay you every 6 months after that. In order to be paid, it’s essential that you submit meter readings every 3 months. We ask for these to make sure that the readings we’re getting from your smart meter are correct. You can send these into us at seg@peoplesenergy.co.uk.

How long is the contract for?

Our SEG tariff is fixed rate, with a contract for 12 months.

If for any reason, you’d like to switch away to another supplier for your SEG payments before the end of your contract, we’ll charge a small exit fee of £15, to cover our costs. If you want to switch once your contract period has ended, there’s no charge.

Am I eligible to sign up for the SEG tariff?

To receive SEG payments, there’s a few criteria you’ll need to meet. Please note that at the moment, we’re offering our tariff to homeowners only.

  1. You must have a solar photovoltaic (PV), wind, hydro or anaerobic digestion (AD) installation up to a capacity of 5MW, or micro-combined heat and power (micro-CHP) up to a capacity of 50kW.
  2. For solar, wind or micro-CHP installations up to 50kW, you’ll need to provide us with a copy of your issued by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (or equivalent).
  3. You must have a SMETS2 smart meter that we can take half-hourly export readings from.
  4. You must have an export Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN).
  5. You can’t be getting Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments, SEG payments from another supplier, or receiving public grants for your energy.

See our full SEG tariff terms and conditions.

Can I still get FiT payments if I sign up to SEG?

No. If you’d like to sign up to SEG, you’ll need to stop your FiT export payments.

What happens at the end of my contract?

When your contract is coming to its end, we’ll get in touch to ask if you’d like to renew, and to offer you our new SEG tariff. You’ll also have the option to switch away to another supplier.

If you choose to stay with us, but don’t renew, we’ll automatically move you onto our variable rate SEG tariff. On our SEG variable rate tariff, the price we offer for your electricity may go down.

Do I need to be a member of People’s Energy to sign up for SEG payments?

No, you don’t need to get your domestic electricity supply from us to sign up to our SEG Tariff. But we’d love to have you join us! Get your quote in 60 seconds, or find out about our upfront and ethical approach to energy, and our mission to end fuel poverty.

If I’m a People’s Energy member, can I have my payments added to my account?

No, we’ll make these payments separately by bank transfer or by cheque.

How do I apply?

To apply, please download our application form. Fill it in, and send to our SEG team seg@peoplesenergy.co.uk, along with the documentation we ask for on the form. We’ll get in contact with you within the next 5 working days to confirm receipt, and we may also ask for a few more details from you. It’ll take up to 4 weeks to get you set up, then you’re ready to go!
